Local Carmaker Sees Big Future for Their Small Cars

Updated: Monday, April 30 2012, 09:26 AM CDT
In an industrial park in Pflugerville, you'll find an assembly line turning our a new kind of small car.  The Kenguru is a no-frills electric car that can carry one passenger seated in their wheelchair.  Stacy Zoern, an Austin attorney, came across the Hungarian car when she was looking for a vehicle for herself.

Zoern says she found out the car on the Internet was a prototype and the company did not have the funding to produce the car.  That gave her the idea to come up with a business plan to produce the car.  Zoern raised about $2 million and brought production of the car to Texas.

The Kenguru is not for everyone.  It was a top speed of only 25 MPH so it is not allowed on highways.  But since it is designed for a person to drive the vehicle from their wheelchair, it's the perfect car for a person with disabilities to go to the grocery store or run errands.

The first run from the production line shipped out to a dealer in Europe.  And this week Kenguru will be at a major accessibility trade show in New York where Zoern hopes to make the first of what she believes will be many sales in the U.S.
