Longest Running Kite Festival In U.S. Kicks Off Another Year

Updated: Wednesday, February 26 2014, 08:43 AM CST

Hundreds of kites will take over the Austin skyline at the 86th Annual ABC Zilker Park Kite Festival on March 2. The festival will be on Zilker's great lawn from 10:00am-5:00pm.

Kids of all ages are dusting off their kites to participate in the annual kite flying contest. Sign up is from 11:00am-2:00pm. If you don't have a kite already, there will be a kite making workshop on site or you can make one at home. All you need is a sheet of paper, tape, a straw, streamer and some string. Click on the video above to see a demonstration from Dorsey Twidwell, festival chair.

The event is free and any proceeds raised at concessions will go benefit non-profit organizations in Central Texas engaged in the prevention of child abuse.

If the event gets rained out, it will be rescheduled for March 9th.
