Off-Leash Area For Dogs Could Shrink At Auditorium Shores

Updated: Tuesday, October 8 2013, 06:02 AM CDT

Big changes could be on the way for one of the most popular places to take your dogs in Austin. Leash rules could be changing at Auditorium Shores, and tonight you can sound off.

The city’s looking at building a new off-leash area for dogs. Some residents telling the city during a recent meeting they’re not fans of moving dogs from the open spaces of the lawn to the much smaller proposed area near the water. But the city’s worried that lots of dogs and cyclists and pedestrians all in one area crossing paths isn’t safe.

Their plan reroutes the hike and bike trail around the new, smaller off-leash area and builds three new “dog launches” so the dogs can swim safely into Lady Bird Lake. It’s just one part of a huge renovation project that would close most of Auditorium Shores for a year starting in January.

You can learn more and let the city know what you think Tuesday night. The city’s holding a meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Dougherty Arts  Center at 1110 Barton Springs Road.
