Personal Parking Meter Alleviating Parking Frustrations

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:13 PM CDT

Safety concerns, coupled with parking frustrations forced the City of Austin to get creative. A few months ago Austin introduced personal parking meters you control from your car, but parking officials say many drivers still don't know about the convenient device available to them.

It's called EasyPark. You download money onto the compact square device and when you park and press on, it deducts your parking fees straight from your account. Just display it in the window closest to the curb so it's in clear sight for parking meter attendants. A big perk is you'll never pay for more parking than you need and you don't have to fumble with your wallet out in the open, near a parking meter station.

"We would hope that more and more people would use this. It would make it easier for them and it's fairly an inexpensive device," says Steve Grassfield, parking management, City of Austin.

Austin is the first major city in the U.S. to use this personal parking meter. It costs $29.95, which includes a $10 credit for parking. EasyPark beeps every minute it's running, so you'll never forget to drive away without turning the meter off.  Also if you turn the meter on before parking hours start, it won't run until those hours kick in. For example you arrive at work at 6:00 am, but you're not charged until 8:00 am. It will also stop charging when parking hours end.
