Pflugerville Police: Still Looking for Attempted Kidnapping Suspect

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:12 PM CDT

On Thursday morning, Pflugerville Police tell us they're still looking for the man they say tried to kidnap two girls near an elementary school in Pflugerville. It happened along a hike and bike trail near the 2500 block of Quiet Water Pass around 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Less than 24 hours after it happened, police tell us they have specialized patrols and are stepping up their presence after the incident. The trail and surrounding subdivision and elementary school were quiet Thursday morning, and we saw some Sheriffs deputies nearby.

Late Wednesday, police released a sketch of the suspect. They describe him as a white male, 5'7" to 5'9", slender build, blue eyes, last seen in a grey hoodie and sweatpants and dark shoes. Officers think he's involved with several incidents involving children.

Around 7 a.m. Wednesday, police say two girls, ages 9 and 10, were walking to school when the man in the sketch walked up behind them and grabbed one of them by the shoulder. Officers say both girls started screaming, and the man put his hand over one of their mouths. The girl broke free, and both ran to the nearby elementary school and told staff what happened. Witnesses say the man may have taken off in a red pickup truck.

"I actually did tell her (my niece) today I told her to make sure she pays attention to her surroundings cause she's the type of girl that likes to just look down or pays attention to her friends," said Maria Ortiz of Pflugerville, early Thursday morning. "Just look around you cause there could be someone following you, you never know, watching your move."

On Thursday morning, Pflugerville ISD's website listed some safety suggestions for parents to reinforce to their kids. Among them:

-Encourage kids to walk in groups

-Remind them to tell an adult if they see something suspicious

-Never accept a ride from a stranger

-Be cautious when talking to strangers.

Police say if you have any information about the case, call (512) 251-4004 or email to
