Professor Dumpster Survives First Night

Updated: Wednesday, February 5 2014, 08:53 AM CST

Despite overnight temperatures in the 30's Dr. Jeff Wilson, a.k.a Professor Dumpster of Huston-Tillotson University, has made it through his first night sleeping in a dumpster. Thanks to an insulated sleeping bag and some cardboard that lined the dumpster overnight, the professor was able to stay warm, but his next hurdle is even more difficult. He has to figure out how to take a shower in the dumpster, using water he personally collected from Town Lake.

Professor Dumpster says his decision to make the 36 square foot, former trash can, his cozy sleeping quarters is all for the sake of spreading the word that Americans are capable of downsizing. For an entire year, he will work side by side with students at Huston-Tillotson University to come up with creative ways to reduce his carbon footprint on our world. Slowly they will transform this minimal dumpster into a real home with even the convenience of a proper bed.

The professor has already started to document his year long experiment with a mounted Go Pro. He's also making it a point to visit area schools, K-12, to educate students on sustainability. Click on The Dumpster Project to follow Professor Dumpster's journey.
