Students Protest School Lunches; New Federal Regulations

Updated: Tuesday, September 25 2012, 06:20 AM CDT
A group of students are boycotting school lunches. The boycott is in protest of the new Federal requirements that forces school districts to limit calories in lunches to 850 calories. The rules require students to pay extra for more.

School officials in Mukwonago, Wisconsin say the students immediately noticed the lack of a favorite food item that caused the uproar.

Pam Harris is the Food Service Supervisor for the school. Harris says, “The portion of garlic bread was cut in half, or a little less than half, and that’s such a popular item that it was really noticeable. I think it really pushed some of our kids over the edge.”

Football Coach, Clay Iverson, encourages athletes to bring extra food. "We've always encouraged our athletes that do eat hot lunch to bring extra. I do think hot lunch is geared toward the student who's not in a very rigorous activity,” said Iverson.

Pam Harris says the school normally serves about 800 lunches per day. When the school lunch boycott began last week, they only served 290 lunches.

Harris said if the boycott continues, it could lead to cuts in the cafeteria. Students Protest School Lunches; New Federal Regulations
