Teen Survives Flight In Wheel-Well

Updated: Monday, April 21 2014, 07:59 AM CDT

A 16 year old is alive after being stowed away for 5 ½ hours in the wheel-well of a plane on a flight from San Jose, California to Maui, Hawaii.

Ground crews found the unidentified teenager roaming the Kahului Airport tarmac dazed and confused. He told investigators he ran away from home Sunday morning and rode in the wheel-well of Hawaiian Airlines Flight 45.

Investigators have been able to prove some of the teen's story. Surveillance video shows the teen walking across the ramp towards the aircraft in San Jose and him crawling out of the main landing gear in Hawaii.

Analysts say temperatures in the wheel-well can reach 40 degrees below zero and altitudes are well above Mt. Everest.

"You would suffocate most likely up there so I mean, like I said, it's extremely unlikely that somebody would survive that long at that altitude. And if they did survive, you would think that they would have frostbite and all sorts of problems associated with the cold up there," says Peter Forman, Pilot Aviation Expert.

The boy was released to child protective services and was not charged with a crime.
