Texas Students Face Week Of STAAR Tests

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:12 PM CDT

Good news and bad news for Texas school children this week.  The good news is they have no homework all week.  The bad news is they’re facing a week of standardized testing in school.  It’s time for the STAAR or the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness.  It’s extremely important because 5th to 8th graders can’t advance to the next grade unless they pass it.

The testing also puts a lot of pressure on schools and teachers because they are often penalized if their students don’t do well.  Texas lawmakers have heard parents complain that they feel schools are teaching to the test and if it’s not going to be on the test then their child is not going to learn it.  The Texas House responded recently by voting to reduce the number of standardized tests required of high school students from 15 to 5.  They are also developing opportunities in vocational education for students who may not be college bound.

So what’s on the testing schedule?

Grade 4 & 7 Writing Day 1
Grade 5 & 8 Mathematics
English I & III Reading

Grade 4 & 7 Writing Day 2
Grade 5 & 8 Reading
English II Writing

To prepare your child for testing days, make sure they get plenty of rest and a good breakfast and avoid any distractions to their mind is clear to focus on the task at hand.
