Update: 2nd Person Dies In Fatal Wrong-Way Crash

Updated: Wednesday, October 23 2013, 08:06 AM CDT
Update 06:25 a.m.

Police say a second person has died after a collision in the 12000 Block of Mopac in Northwest Austin.

**************************************************

This morning, Mopac is back open after a head on collision killed a woman, sent a man to the hospital fighting for his life, and shut down the northbound lanes for more than three hours. It happened around 1 a.m. near the Burnet/Duval exit.

Police say a car heading the wrong way down Mopac plowed into another car at very high speeds and clipped a third vehicle.

EMS officials says a woman in her 40s was killed on scene, and crews took a man to a Round Rock hospital with critical injuries, while the people in the third vehicle were okay.

Police units and Starflight were already looking for that wrong way driver after getting calls. APD officials say this isnt the first time theyve dealt with this kind of tragedy on Mopac.

Unfortunately we have had several of these where people have been driving the wrong way, said Sgt. Darrell Burnham. I can think of at least three of them on Mopac within fairly recently.

Going forward, detectives with the Vehicular Homicide Unit still have to figure out who was responsible, whether alcohol or drugs were involved, and if any charges will be filed.
