You Can Raise A Puppy For Guide Dogs For The Blind

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:12 PM CDT

Guide Dogs for the Blind is the largest guide dog school in the country and provides enhanced mobility to qualified visually impaired individuals through partnership with dogs whose unique skills are developed and nurtured by dedicated volunteers and a professional staff.

Their vision is to "use our Power of Partnering to improve quality of life." Dogs are raised in regular homes from roughly 8 weeks to 15 months of age, then they're paired with a visually impaired person (the student) who then goes through the training school with the dog and ultimately can lead a more productive life.

The Guide Dog folks have amped up their efforts in the Austin area to recruit folks to serve as their "Puppy Raisers" and help them help more visually impaired folks. Three puppies were delivered in the past couple of weeks to NEW puppy raisers there in Austin.

As a puppy raiser, you do not only receive expert local guidance as you train your dogs, but you'll also join a community of like-minded people all working toward improving the quality of life for people who are blind.

To learn more about their program go to www.guidedogs.com or call 800-295-4050.
