California Tries To Woo Texas Businesses

Updated: Monday, June 30 2014, 06:30 PM CDT

Oh no he didn't. That's what California lawmakers must have thought when the Texas governor showed up on their doorstep in a California-made Tesla. He's trying to convince the electric carmaker to build a battery manufacturing plant in the Lone Star State.

Today, California returned the favor sending the Republican Caucus Chair from their state senate.

Ted Gaines came with a cardboard prop of a Tesla and a simple message. "We're here to invite jobs from Texas to California," he said, adding, "We're a state of innovators and entrepreneurs and job creators."

But the Texas Association of Business points out that business leaders already made their decision.

TAB President Bill Hammond says, "You're seeing literally thousands of businesses move from California to Texas and they're doing so because of the business climate."

Hammond points to a recent CNBC Survey of Top States for Business where Texas trounced California in cost of doing business, infrastructure and business friendliness.

But to be fair California did beat Texas in access to capital, quality of life and the all-important technology and innovation.

Hammond concedes, "As far as innovation and technology California does rank high there, but we rank right next to them. They're number one we're number two."
