Davis Wants State Of Emergency Declared On Texas Border

Updated: Monday, June 23 2014, 02:03 PM CDT

Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Wendy Davis is asking Gov. Rick Perry to declare a state of emergency along Texas' border with Mexico amid a surge of unaccompanied minors pouring into the U.S.

In a letter, the Fort Worth state senator says doing so will alleviate pressure on local communities and federal authorities.

She's visiting the border Monday for a firsthand look at the "crisis."

Davis also wants Perry to convene a special legislative session to increase funding to city and county officials and charities.

Some conservatives have sought a special session too, but want to focus on border security.

Davis said Perry should push for federal reimbursement of Texas' immigration-related costs.

A Perry spokesman responded that Davis should send her letter on to Washington and her "political ally" President Barack Obama.
