Perry Jokes About Lawmakers OKing Budget He Likes

Updated: Monday, April 29 2013, 10:33 AM CDT

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Gov. Rick Perry is joking about the Legislature passing a Texas budget that's to his liking.
Addressing a state National Day of Prayer breakfast Monday, Perry said of Texas lawmakers present, "They don't get recognized until they vote the right way on the budget."
He added that he was kidding, and had to be nice because "we're not in that veto-proof period yet."
Texas' Rainy Day Fund crash reserves are projected to reach $12 billion if left untouched. Perry said he'd like to keep $7 billion, but lawmakers may vote to spend more.
Perry also hasn't gained much traction with his calls for $1.6 billion in business tax cuts.
The governor could veto any bill, though, close enough to the end of the legislative session that it can't override him.
