Ukrainians In US, Canada Urge Protester Support

Updated: Wednesday, February 19 2014, 02:25 PM CST

As protesters die in the streets of Kiev, Ukrainians living in the United States and Canada are calling for a stronger response by the U.S. and the European Union.

In the Pittsburgh area, Ukrainian churches and social clubs are organizing rallies and urging area congressional members to speak out.

The Rev. Timothy Tomson is pastor of St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He says people in the community are disheartened that Ukrainians are dying because they want freedom. Tomson says he's very disappointed at the U.S. response.

James Bezan is a Canadian member of Parliament of Ukrainian descent. He says he's disgusted by the callous behavior of President Viktor Yanukovych and his regime and angered by the excessive force they've used. More than 1 million people of Ukrainian descent live in Canada.
