Indictment Petition For Former APD Officer Delivered To Travis Co. DA

Updated: Wednesday, April 9 2014, 06:29 PM CDT

The family of a man shot and killed by an Austin police detective is demanding action.

On Wednesday, members of The People's Task Force delivered a petition to the Travis County District Attorney herself that the detective be indicted.

Last year on July 26, Detective Charles Kleinert shot Larry Eugene Jackson Jr. in the back of the head after a brief chase. Kleinert been investigating a bank robbery and Jackson -- who was not involved in that crime -- ran when he was being questioned.

The group has collected about 400 signatures demanding Kleinert's indictment and they expected to hand them over to the DA's office but they weren't expecting Rosemary Lehmberg herself to come out of her office.

She gave her condolences to Jackson's sister and also assured the group that the grand jury is reviewing the case.

The group initially demanded Kleinert be fired from the Austin Police Department but he has since retired.
