UPDATE: San Marcos Police Identify Driver In Fiery Crash That Left 2 Dead

Updated: Wednesday, July 2 2014, 02:19 PM CDT

UPDATE: The driver killed in a fiery crash after he fled from San Marcos police on June 23 has been identified as 39-year-old Fabian Dionicio Hernandez, of San Marcos.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

-------------------------------

ORIGINAL STORY:

Two people were killed early Monday morning in San Marcos after a driver attempted to flee a traffic stop, police say.

The fatal crash happened at around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Cheatham and Rio Vista streets just west of I-35.

Investigators say officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a motorist suspected of impaired driving but he fled at a high rate of speed in the Rio Vista neighborhood, a residential area with numerous homes.

Police say the driver failed to negotiate the roundabout at the intersection of Cheatham and Rio Vista and struck the landscaping in the center -- causing the vehicle to burst into flames.

Both the driver and passenger -- identified as Charles Lee Crayton, 43, of San Marcos -- were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver has not yet been identified.

San Marcos police say the investigation is ongoing.
