2 Hurt in West Texas Derailment of UP Train

Updated: Monday, August 4 2014, 03:04 PM CDT
BARSTOW, Texas (AP) -- A collision between a freight train and a water-hauling truck in West Texas has left two people hurt and more than a dozen cars and locomotives derailed.

Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Jeff DeGraff (dih-GRAF') says crews worked Monday to repair and reopen the line near Barstow. That's about 50 miles southwest of Odessa.

DeGraff says three locomotives and 10 cars derailed Sunday afternoon but remained upright. The eastbound train was hauling cargo containers from California to Shreveport, Louisiana, when the collision happened at a rural crossing.

DeGraff says the trucker was transported to an Odessa hospital. His name and condition weren't immediately available. DeGraff says a conductor suffered a minor arm injury that did not require medical attention.

The spokesman did not immediately provide more details on the cargo.2 Hurt in West Texas Derailment of UP Train
