Austin Holds Lifeguard Job Fair

Updated: Tuesday, June 10 2014, 05:27 PM CDT

Half of Austin's public pools remain closed because of a lifeguard shortage. They were all supposed to open Friday but they're still about 300 lifeguards short.

But on Tuesday the City of Austin held a job fair at the aquatics building by Deep Eddy Pool in West Austin in the hopes of resolving the problem.

It was a one-stop shop to knock out the application process. You will still have to spend about a week to get certified.

But many of the applicants say they are ready to get to work.

The city has also raised hourly pay to entice people to sign up -- 17 and up get $10.25 an hour.
