Austin Man Pleads Guilty To Pointing Laser At APD Helicopter

Updated: Monday, July 7 2014, 01:57 PM CDT

An Austin man pled guilty in federal court Monday to pointing a laser at an Austin police helicopter last February that was trying to land

It happened February 15. Officials say 25–year-old Gabriel Soza Ruedas, Jr. admitted to aiming the beam of a laser pointer at the helicopter as it was on approach to land at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

The helicopter delayed its landing to investigate the source of the laser. The crew was able to communicate to ground units from APD to locate the source and apprehend Ruedas -- who was found with the laser pointer in his sweatshirt pocket, officials say.

Ruedas faces up to five years in federal prison and a maximum $250,000 fine for the offense.
