Austin Officials Issue Warning About Increase In Rabies Exposures

Updated: Tuesday, August 19 2014, 03:25 PM CDT

City of Austin officials say nine bats have tested positive for rabies in the past week.

And officials with the Animal Services Office say several people have come into contact with untested bats along the Congress Avenue Bridge, home to one of the largest colonies of Mexican Free Tail bats in Texas.

Bats commonly carry the rabies virus, a disease fatal to humans. If you see a bat, do not touch it, especially if it's on the ground, not moving, or appears to be dead.

If you think you've been exposed called 311 immediately.
