Bastrop Co. Deputy Indicted For Murder

Updated: Tuesday, June 17 2014, 06:31 PM CDT

A Bastrop County Sheriff's Office deputy has been indicted for murder in the shooting death of a woman outside her boyfriend's home in February.

A grand Jury indicted Deputy Daniel Willis on Tuesday for the murder of Yvette Smith.

Smith was shot February 16 in the doorway of her boyfriend's home north of Bastrop.

It started when deputies responded to a report of two males fighting over a gun. They responded to the 100 block of Zimmerman Avenue and encountered one male outside. The other was inside the residence. Before the shooting, the deputies tried to make contact with the subject inside the home but got no response, according to investigators.

Initially the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office said the woman had a gun, but hours later took back that statement.

Deputy Willis has been booked into the Bastrop County Jail with a bond was set at $100,000.

The Bastrop County Sheriff's Office says Willis will be terminated from his job effective immediately.

We will update this story as we learn more.
