Body Found In Texas Near Border Was Guatemalan Boy

Updated: Monday, June 30 2014, 10:56 AM CDT

South Texas sheriff's officials say a body found this month in brush near the border apparently was an 11-year-old unaccompanied immigrant from Guatemala.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said Monday the decomposed body was that of Gilberto Francisco Ramos Juarez.

Guerra said the boy was found June 15 near La Joya, about 20 miles west of McAllen. Authorities spoke with his brother in Chicago and his father in Guatemala, who confirmed his identity based on the clothes and a rosary he wore. He was from Huehuetenango, Chiantla, Guatemala. There were no signs of trauma.

More than 52,000 unaccompanied children have been apprehended entering the U.S. illegally since October, creating what President Barack Obama has called an "urgent humanitarian situation." Most are from Central America.
