Downtown Streets Closing Tuesday For X Games

Updated: Tuesday, June 3 2014, 03:57 PM CDT

On Tuesday morning, with just two days away from the start of the X Games, the setup is already underway in downtown Austin. Overnight crews started closing off several streets around the Capitol, including several blocks of 10th and 11th Streets and Congress Avenue.

These streets will be closed through noon Friday.

This is all because of a free event set for Thursday to kick off the X Games. Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk and several other well-known skateboarders and BMX riders will be hitting the vertical ramp starting at 5 p.m. Thursday for a demo before the skateboarding and BMX competitions. The main X Games events run Friday through Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas.

It's not just drivers being impacted by the X Games. For nearly 13,000 people who ride CapMetro downtown each day, starting Tuesday, they'll see 19 routes diverted off of Congress onto Lavaca and Guadalupe. These changes will last at least through the summer as part of Cap Metro's summer service changes.
