Dropbox Building Home In Downtown Austin

Updated: Wednesday, August 6 2014, 06:53 PM CDT

San Francisco based Dropbox is looking to make Austin it's second home. Despite turning down almost a quarter of a million dollars in city incentives, the online file sharing company shows no signs of slowing its expansion.  Sherry Birk, Dropbox's recruiting lead in Austin, says, "We are here. We are here to stay."

The downtown office is currently home to 50 employees handling sales and operations.  Drawing on Austin's vast talent pool that includes the University of Texas and a robust technology sector, the office is looking to add 150 more sales and operations positions in the next 18 months.  Early next year, the office will move to a newly constructed space in the heart of downtown, 58,000 square feet covering three floors of a new building at 5th and Congress.

Sherry Birk says Dropbox loves the talent pool in Austin, and while trying to stay true to the roots of the San Francisco office, they are embracing the culture of Austin and adding elements that highlight the local community.   From the shuffleboard table in the entry, to a longhorn bicycle seat art, to rows and rows of iMacs, the office is fun and bustling with energy.   Birk says, "We work hard, we play hard, and for me that means I have the flexibility to be a mom, and come to work every day and make an impact."

Taylor "Squid" Piper graduated from UT in December and joined the company when there were only 20 members.  Piper says, "Dropbox wasn't even on my radar, but I want people to know that these incredible opportunities exist. You're never looked at as a new hire or a new grad or anything like that. You're looked at as a contributing member of the team."  Piper adds that he is excited to be part of a fast growing company right here in Austin.

Job openings range from junior and senior level sales positions to opportunities for bilingual candidates.  Dropbox hopes to make Austin the hub of support for Latin America.  Dropbox currently has 300 million users worldwide, four million businesses on Dropbox, and more than 80,000 Dropbox for Business customers including Eventbrite, Foursquare, Kayak, National Geographic, Paul Mitchell, Spotify, Sur la Table, Under Armour, and Zendesk. The company has been valued at $10 billion, making it one of the most valuable privately funded companies, along with Uber and AirBnB.
