Emotional Houston Woman Gives Up Snakes

Updated: Wednesday, June 25 2014, 10:29 AM CDT

A Houston woman choked back tears Tuesday as she admitted to a judge that she couldn't take care of her 15 snakes.

The snakes were seized from Brittany Barrineau's home last week. She fought to keep them, but admitted the hard truth in court, and gave them up. "I just want what's best for them. That's the bottom line. I just want to see them happy and that's all that really matters is that they are happy," Barrineau said. "I love my snakes enough to let them go."

Last week constables looked for every snake they could find in Barrineau's home. The longest was 15 feet. Deputies who worked on the case say the snakes lives were at stake. "In the beginning, the concerns were the cleanliness of the cages and the size of the cages and the fact that several of the snakes appeared quite thin," said Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen.

The SPCA is now caring for all 15 of the rescued snakes rescued, and a cat. The organization says they're all getting treatment and improving.

Pct. 1 Constable's office says it now wants to help Barrineau do the same. "I did offer to get her some psychiatric help because I did think that she's in a very tough spot right now, and so our office is going to help facilitate some treatment for her," says Rosen.
