Free School Supplies Available For 3 More Days

Updated: Tuesday, August 12 2014, 06:30 PM CDT

A local non-profit group called Manos de Cristo is helping children in need start the school year off right with free back-to-school gear.

Barbara Mack's grandchildren are just two of thousands of Central Texans who need help preparing for school.

"We just moved out of one apartment, we're staying in a hotel while our other one gets ready, and my daughter-in-law lives on a limited income," says Mack.

So she came to the North Austin Events Center to wait in line for free clothes, backpacks, and school supplies.

"And we had just already been putting are heads together on how we were gonna get everything together for school," she says.

They are not alone. Manos de Cristo aims to empower and assist low-income families.

"One in three children in Austin, Texas lives in poverty," says Julie Ballesteros, executive director of Manos de Cristo. "So if we can help make an impact on some of those children, we are happy to do it."

The back to school event continues for three more days and families are strongly encouraged to come out with no invitation needed.

"We'll be here until Friday and you know we're here to help any child that is in need," says Ballesteros.

The event is held at the North Austin Events Center located at 10601A North Lamar Boulevard from 8 a.m. to noon.

About 200 kids will be served every day.
