Gas Prices Down Slightly in Austin Area

Updated: Monday, June 30 2014, 10:54 AM CDT

The average price of gas in Central Texas is down a little over a penny, according to gas-tracking website GasBuddy.com.

Prices yesterday were around $3.46 per gallon. That's about 11 cents higher than June 2013, but only four cents higher than a month ago.

Nationwide, the average price of gas is $3.68 per gallon. That's a new high for this year. The price is up 3.5 cents since last month, and more than 17 cents higher than this time last year.

But GasBuddy.com senior petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan says the good news is the peak prices we've hit are already string to wind down. With the situation in Iraq cooling down, and hurricane season seems to be mild, gas prices are expected to start declining. But, DeHaan says we won't see a decrease before the Fourth of July weekend. In fact, we're likely to see the highest prices at the pump this July 4 since 2008.
