Good Samaritan Chases Suspected Hit-And-Run Driver

Updated: Thursday, June 19 2014, 10:45 PM CDT

Pat Johnson nabbed a prime parking spot.

"The whole street was lined with APD cars," recalled Johnson.

From the front seat of his car, Johnson had an unobstructed view of the SWAT situation unfolding at an apartment complex on Fairway Street on Monday.  But it's what happened next that threw Johnson into drive.

"I heard boom. Something hit. I didn't see it happen," said Johnson.

That boom was from a car crash police said was caused by Agustin Lopez.

It happened at the intersection of Montopolis Drive and Fairway Street.  The victims were stopped at the crosswalk -- waiting for pedestrians to cross the road -- when Lopez allegedly slammed into their car from behind.

Lopez then cut through the parking lot of a Family Dollar store and drove past Johnson and the SWAT team. Johnson gave chase.

"I'm not gonna stand around and let people be victimized by criminals and get away with it," added Johnson.

Johnson followed the runaway driver until officers arrived. He then returned to the crash site to check on the victims.

"Their lives are disrupted due to someone's ignorance and their irresponsibility when driving behind the vehicle," said Johnson.

Two scenarios -- playing out just feet apart -- and thanks to help from a Good Samaritan, both ended with the suspects in cuffs.

One of the victims was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Lopez is charged with failure to stop and render aid.
