Hundreds Without Water For A Day

Updated: Wednesday, August 6 2014, 06:49 PM CDT

Back in 2006, Austin voters approved bonds to improve storm drainage.  And now eight years later it's finally happening along with some other needed fixes.  But in the process, 900 customers spent a day without water.

It happened in a mostly residential neighborhood near 38th Street and Jefferson Street in Central Austin.  Jason Hill, public information officer for the Austin Water Utility explained the unusually widespread water outage.  He says, "Normally we're able to isolate the work area where we're only inconveniencing a handful or a dozen or two customers.  But here because of the logistics and the situation there was just no way to avoid the amount of customers that are without water."

At the nearby Sportsman's Barber Shop, owner Mikey DeLeon stayed open, but business was way down because everyone else closed.  He explained, "A little of what happens is we get more foot traffic with all the businesses that are normally open here," adding, "We've got a restaurant next door and a nail salon and other offices that might have shut down for the day I guess."

Down the street, a shade tree mechanic wasn't too bothered by the water being shut-off, either.  James Halsey told us, "I drink filtered water. I don't drink tap water. And that's the only thing I would need."  And the city managed to keep the water running at the busy Jefferson Building which includes a radiological center and specialty practices.
