Iraq Villagers Flee Militant Advance In North

Updated: Thursday, June 26 2014, 11:08 AM CDT

Britain's top diplomat is carrying much the same message to Iraq today as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry delivered earlier this week.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague calls Sunni militants who have overrun large chunks of Iraqi territory a "mortal threat." Like Kerry, Hague calls on the country's leaders to unite against the insurgent threat from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Hague is to meet Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, Kurdish regional President Masoud Barzani and other political figures later today.

Meanwhile, Hundreds of Iraqi villagers fleeing advances by Sunni militants remain crowded at a checkpoint into Iraq's nearly autonomous and relatively safe Kurdish region. Many have been delayed by lack of a sponsor inside, but many others have already been admitted to the region, including both Shiites and Christians.
