Man Killed In North Austin Big Rig Crash Identified

Updated: Thursday, July 31 2014, 05:04 PM CDT

Police have identified the man killed on I-35 in North Austin early Wednesday morning after he struck an 18-wheeler with his vehicle from behind.

It happened at around 3:20 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-35 just south of Parmer Lane.

Investigators say a black 2004 Freightliner had pulled onto the shoulder, but when it began pulling back onto the main lanes and was gaining speed it was struck from the rear by a blue 2006 Volvo pulling two enclosed trailers.

The driver of the Volvo -- identified as 51-year-old Michael Raymond Mitchell -- was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner stayed at the scene to speak with investigators, police say.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-5560.

This is Austin's 29th fatal traffic crash and the 36th fatality of 2014. At this time in 2013, there were 49 fatality crashes and 50 fatalities.
