More Remains Found At Troubled Mortuary

Updated: Thursday, August 21 2014, 11:51 AM CDT
FORT WORTH, TX (KTVT)-- There has been another disturbing discovery inside a building that once housed a Texas mortuary.

Weeks after the remains of eight mummified bodies were found inside the funeral home, a cleaning crew found more remains on Wednesday.

The manager for the property leased out to Johnson Family Mortuary says the recovery of what appears to be human remains continues long after the decaying bodies were removed in mid-July.  "A week later we found several more containers of ashes that were turned over to Fort Worth PD at that time. And just yesterday while we were doing the last of the clean-up we found another container of ashes."

The latest container of ashes was found on a shelf with cleaning supplies. The simple black box went unnoticed until the final stages of the building's clean up.

A Fort Worth Police Detective left with the possible remains.

For the property manager, who only wants to be identified as Rick, this has been an ongoing and heartbreaking nightmare.

The aunt of one of two babies found decaying in the mortuary came to Rick looking for answers.  "And she asked me if there was a baby there. And I just asked her how old the baby was and she said it was stillborn. And I said how long ago and she said January. And at that point, luckily I had my sunglasses on because I started crying. I have kids and to imagine one of them being in a tupperware container just ticked me off. When I was driving home I broke down in the car because it's just - I was so angry, so mad that anybody would treat human beings like this, dead or alive, is just ridiculous to me. I can't imagine it."

Rick says he hopes the families will find some closure through the recovery of remains and through the legal system.  "To me, right here, I feel obligated, I need to watch out for these deceased and hopefully they'll get what's coming to them."

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the two mortuary owners were arrested last month. They face seven misdemeanor charges of abuse of a corpse.
