Need For Food Bank Rises With Summer Temps

Updated: Tuesday, July 8 2014, 09:01 PM CDT

Right now nearly 25 percent of Central Texas children are in danger of going hungry. Summertime is not fun time when the kids are hungry and the light bill is due.  It's a huge problem, but you can be a part of the solution.

The Capital Area Food Bank says the work of their partner food pantries is especially important during the summer months.

Joanna Linden explains, "It's because kids are out of school. They're not getting free or reduced lunches or breakfasts. So there's more demand on the family to provide food."

The food bank works with some 300 local non-profits to provide food for families. And that also includes seniors on fixed incomes. They're on very limited budgets and then utilities are on the rise and a lot of the expenses that they have, so they need food during these summer months more than ever.

Your donations are what fills the food bank warehouse and keeps their volunteers busy. But the size of the problem is what empties the warehouse just as fast.

So what can you do to help?  Go to any area Randalls and donate cash or buy a bag of food for the Capital Area Food Bank.  We have more information on our web site. Just click here.
