Neighbors Rally To Help Evicted Veteran in San Antonio

Updated: Friday, August 22 2014, 03:54 PM CDT
SAN ANTONIO (KSAT)--  Several residents in a San Antonio neighborhood came to the aid of a wounded warrior who was left homeless on Wednesday, after falling behind on his rent.

The veteran lost a leg in combat in Afghanistan and also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of his time in battle.

"He risked his life for us, it's the least we can do at this point."  Kara Myers is just one of many in a San Antonio neighborhood, who saw the eviction happening at the veteran's home. When the neighbors saw what was happening, they jumped into action.

The entire neighborhood came together to help the man get all his belongings safely tucked away.  A virtual army of 50 people picked up pieces of the veteran's life, including his flag, his purple heart, and other awards.

"It was hard to see.  A lot of people were really upset.  But we are all just trying to focus on like the positive.  Like, let's get him moved," said Kara.

The soldier, who asked not to be named for reasons of privacy, had been on disability, but it was discontinued. The home he was renting went into foreclosure last year and he was behind in his rent.

The group set up a personal fundraising website, and within just a few hours, they had managed to raise some of the money needed to help move the man into a new home.

"He wants to move to Mississippi, that's where his family is.  So we just want to get the money for the moving company to get his stuff moved over there," Myers said.
