New Hybrid Bike Folds In Half, Integrates With Smartphone

Updated: Sunday, June 8 2014, 12:31 PM CDT

In a bike-friendly city such as Austin, a folding electric bike could be a welcome means of transportation.

Three Argentinians developed prototypes and have an online funding campaign to help bring the bikes to the masses.

Eric Sevillia, one of the founders of the Gi-Bike, helped develop the bike as a means of getting around in congested cities where free space is tight.

The bike can fold in half to ease in carrying in elevators or storing in closets when not in use.

Pedaling assistance can help the rider for approximately 40 miles on a full charge with a speed limit of 15 miles per hour.

Owners can link their smartphone to the bike and map destinations. The bike is also able to charge cell phones as well.

When released to the public, the cost of the bike is likely to be about $3,500.
