Pet Adoptions Critical Before July 4th

Adoptions critical leading up to July 4th before more animals are displaced because of fireworks shows

The Austin Animal Center is overflowing with animals after severe weather recently displaced many pets from their homes. And with July 4th on Friday, hundreds more are expected to end up in the shelter due to fireworks shows. But in an effort to save many lives, the Austin Humane Society visits the AAC every day to pick up as many animals as possible.

Ian Hallett, director of operations for the Austin Humane Society, says adoptions are critical this week to open up more space for any displaced pets. Many local shelters are also offering adoption specials on the fourth of July. The humane society already has ten cute Chihuahuas up for grabs starting Wednesday at noon.

Hallett also reminds pet owners to help put animals at ease by keeping them inside by lunch time on Friday, play music for them, and to relieve stress: offer a bone or chew toy. It is also a good idea to tag and microchip your pet and also keep them away from any hazards such as citronella candles, insect repellent, sunscreen, glow sticks, matches, lighter fluid, and alcohol.
