Police Shut Down I-35 Again To Recreate Deadly Wreck

Updated: Thursday, July 31 2014, 07:19 AM CDT
The southbound lanes are open near Braker Lane after being shut down again late Wednesday night. Austin Police spent hours recreating a deadly wreck involving two semis, which killed one driver and tied up traffic for hours.

Early Thursday morning, a lieutenant at APD says he had not yet received an update from detectives on the case. Police opened the stretch between Braker and Rundberg around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The goal of the investigation is to find out more about what caused the wreck that snarled traffic for nearly seven hours Wednesday morning. Police tell KEYETV two semis slammed into each other, killing the driver of one. We're told he was a man in his 50s. His name has not been given out. The other driver was ok.

"What we look at in these types of situations are is this just a crash or is this something that happened not due to the fault of one driver or another or is this an incident where we have intoxication or recklessness, either based on speed or where there's some kind of  mechanical failure that might have led to the crash," said Sgt. Dustin Lee of APD's Highway Enforcement Command, at the scene Wednesday morning.  "At this point we don't know which one of those things caused this crash so once we determine that, then that'll lead us in the right path to determine if any criminal charges need to happen."
