San Marcos Megaplex To Sell Alcohol

Updated: Monday, June 2 2014, 05:50 PM CDT

It's new to us. But the owners of the Starplex 12 in San Marcos insist they're not the first large-scale multi-screen movie theater to sell alcohol.

Mitchell Roberts is Vice President of Texas Cinema Corp. which owns the Starplex. He says, "There are countless examples of movie theaters across the country that have started to sell alcohol to their customers who might want to enjoy something different."

The Starplex is undergoing renovations right now to make this possible. They're adding a special area to the concession stand just for beer and wine sales. Roberts says the plan is to keep it separate from other concession sales.

Serving alcohol at a movie theater is not that crazy an idea. Family restaurants serve beer and wine with meals, so why not at movie theaters?

The Starplex 12 tells the San Marcos Planning and Zoning Commission that -- despite the changes -- their theater will continue to be safe for all ages.

Kristy Stark with Planning and Development says, "That was one of the biggest things that the applicant talked about. It's still going to be family friendly," adding, "People can still bring their kids, just like going to the bowling alley or to a nice restaurant."

If it all works out look for this idea to spread across Central Texas. The Starplex 12 has a sister megaplex in New Braunfels and is building a new one in Kyle. It's also converting a three-screen discount movie theater in downtown San Marcos into what it calls a "bistro theater."
