Smartphone App Becomes Teacher's Assistant

Updated: Thursday, August 21 2014, 06:48 PM CDT

Every teacher knows the daily struggle of staying on schedule.  Kristi Hull, a K-1 Teacher with NYOS Charter School in North Austin says, “I think a lot of teachers struggle with it especially in the first years of teaching.  It’s a constant, making sure we are on time for things.”  The frustration led one Florida principal to develop an app that could be used as a teacher’s assistant.  Gary Massey says freeing teachers from watching the clock helps them focus on instruction.  After mulling over the idea for years, he sought out a development company to help him create the Teacher’s Schedule Reminder App.

The app allows teachers to preset alarms for any activities, like science, math, P.E., lunch, or recess.  Each activity can have its own special alarm so students recognize the sound and know what to do next.  Hull sees the innovation as helpful, “My watch actually stopped three times yesterday because I kept catching it on things, so having the flexibility for the students just to hear it and know that it’s time to switch would be awesome.”  She adds that having a set routine benefits both teachers and students because it eliminates chaos in the classroom and allows students to focus on the task at hand for a set time.  “I want to make sure they're learning and that they're engaged, and after the ten minute mark, they're not engaged anymore, and they’re not learning anymore”, Hull says.

The Teacher’s Schedule Reminder App currently costs just $.99 and is available for both iPhone and Android smartphones.
