'Taco Bell Tree' Moved To New Location

Updated: Saturday, July 12 2014, 06:45 PM CDT

A century old oak tree got a new home Saturday, thanks to its many supporters and $100,000.

Today the "Taco Bell Tree" no longer shades the restaurant's parking lot in Oak Hill.

It is now on the other side of Highway 290.

Michael Fossum, the executive director of the Austin Heritage Tree Foundation, says they fought to re-locate the tree after learning it would bulldozed for a road expansion project

But it wasn’t an easy process.

"First you have to isolate the root ball, you have to dig around the tree," stated Fossum. “Then you have to go underneath the tree and put pipes underneath it because that's what you use to lift it up."

Fossum says the tree will continue to be supervised for the next five years.

It will have to be watered, mulched and certified arborists will inspect the tree for disease and insect infestations.
