Woman Takes Fatal Fall Off Austin Flyover

Updated: Monday, June 30 2014, 11:53 AM CDT

It's a flyover used by thousands of drivers every day.  It's also the spot where several people have lost their lives.

"I think it happened over the weekend someone flew over the side of the overpass," said Richard Griffin.

Griffin recalled the night a motorcyclist took a fatal fall from the northbound 183 flyover.  The same spot where a woman in her 50's died today.

"We have responded to some in the past few years but what affects the flyover as compared to individual driver is unknown at this time," said Austin Police Corporal Chad Martinka.

Investigators don't know what caused the unidentified woman to lose control of her Harley -- sending her over the concrete barrier and into the brush below.  Detectives are looking into several factors, including wind, speed and alcohol.

"Be careful on flyovers, watch your speed, control it, slow down, better to arrive alive then not at all," added Martinka.

Griffin agrees.  He loves the high of the ride but said today's tragedy is a reminder to take it easy.

"It can be a little bit scary I suppose but it's a little bit fun too. Of course if you make a mistake on a road versus a flyover the consequences are drastically different," added Griffin.
