Austin Road Projects left Unfinished As Contractor Goes Under

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT

Piles of dirt, iron pillars, and orange barrels are what’s left on a barren construction site on North I-35 and Lakeway Drive. The rest of the construction equipment is scattered about and locked away in limbo.

The unfinished overpass is one of three Texas Department of Transportation projects that were suddenly stopped.

Tony Aguilera works at Ironman Pipe and Steel in Georgetown and said he hopes the construction will not hinder his business.

'I'm hoping it’s not going to have an impact on our customers trying to get to the place," Aguilera said. "Hopefully something will pick up soon, business was just starting to take off with this place.”

The reason behind the sudden halt? South Texas road contractor, Ballenger, recently filed for bankruptcy. And now TxDot says 22 road projects in Texas are now left in the balance.

The Lakeway Drive site is supposed to be the new interchange on the SH 45 North tollway in Williamson County, where it will connect with O’Connor Drive and Main Street in Buda.

According to TxDot, the $5.7 million Lakeway Drive project is nearly 30 percent complete.
