Cedar Park Growth Straining City Services

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT

The city of Cedar Park is the fourth fastest growing city in the nation.  But with growth comes an increased demand for city services -- and construction crews are working nonstop to keep up with the high demand.

Ben Conforti is part of a growing breed. "It's really affordable houses. You get a lot of bang for your buck," he says.

Conforti is part of a generation of 30-somethings migrating north to Cedar Park.

"The neighborhood is great it seems like everyone has a lot in common and is in the same season of life," he added.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Cedar Park grew by nearly five percent last year, adding some 6,500 new residents to the city.

That immediate influx could take a toll on city services -- at least in the short term.

"We know we need five fire stations to effectively cover our city," said Cedar Park Fire Chief James Mallinger.

Mallinger says the city has already set aside money to purchase property to build Fire Station #5 -- but that's it.

"We will have to budget for the station, apparatus and man power," added Mallinger.

He claims that could cost at least $4,000,000.  Police Chief Sean Mannix faces his own challenges.

"With population growth comes an increase in calls for service for all types," said Mannix.

Last year officers responded to more than 35,000 calls.  Mannix expects that number to increase with the additional growth.  But he doesn't feel the need to add additional officers -- at least not yet.

"I'm going to be looking at the most effective way to keep residents safe," added Mannix.

Both chiefs seem ready to tackle the challenge.  And believe these short-term growing pains will pay off.
