Handcuffed Proposal Successful

Updated: Wednesday, December 18 2013, 02:50 PM CST

Love has no bounds – even handcuffs.

Justin Harrel planned to propose to his sweetheart at the Elk City, Okla. "Christmas in the Park" event. They were standing outside an enclosed carousel. He had the ring in his pocket.

But Harrel had a problem.  He had outstanding warrants involving bad checks.  And just as he was about to pop the question, a police officer recognized him and tried to arrest him. But Harrel wasn't having it.

"Basically he had to put him on the ground in a nice way. We had to get him handcuffed," Eddie Holland, Elk City Police Chief, said. "That's where the Christmas spirit shined in."

Harrel asked if he could have five minutes before being taken to jail because he was about to propose to his girlfriend.  The officer laughed but then agreed. But what he wouldn't do is take off the handcuffs. So the officer got the ring out of his coat pocket and helped him with it.

"It's hard to propose being handcuffed. You could say that comes after the marriage," Holland said.

Fiancee Elaina Rios said the proposal did not change her opinion of him.

"We're best friends.  He's my rock and I'm his rock. Everybody thinks he's a bad guy but he's not," she said.
