Houston Man Pays $5,000 for Return of Missing Cat

Updated: Wednesday, March 19 2014, 12:30 PM CDT

How much would you pay to get a missing, furry and four-legged member of your family back?

Keith Hardin paid $5,000.

His exotic short hair cat Dolly went missing New Year's Eve after someone broke into his Houston-area apartment. Hardin wasn't sure though if Dolly was stolen, or if she left on her own.

But he put up fliers, and enlisted the help of coworker and fellow cat-lover Charles Frey to find Dolly.

"One of my cats passed away from lung cancer a little more than a month ago and that motivated me to help Keith try to find his cat," Frey said.

Hardin came up with the $5,000 reward money with donations from Frey, and part of his 401K.

"My mom just thinks I'm absolutely nuts to spend that much money on a cat. She's not a cat person but I know she would have done it in a heartbeat for her dog," Hardin said.

It took two and a half months, but a woman at a nearby complex contacted Hardin, saying she found Dolly, and sent him picture proof.

After meeting the woman in a public place, Hardin took Dolly for a checkup. The cat is perfectly fine and back at home with Hardin.
