Nevada Man Leaves Behind $7 Million In Gold Coins

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 10:47 PM CDT

A wheelbarrow of boxes filled with $20 gold coins was discovered in the home of a Nevada man after he died.

Walter Samaszko, 69, died his Carson City home in June but wasn’t discovered for a month.

Neighbor Joe Baxter didn’t know much about Samaszko. He said the only time he would see his neighbor was when Samaszko would come out in the yard and they would exchange a friendly wave.

That’s why when Baxter got a call from Samasko’s realtor asking if he wanted to look through some of his leftover belongings, he was surprised to find a case filled with coins.

“We thought it was ammunition, opened it up and it was rolls of $20 gold pieces,” Baxter said. “I've never seen that much gold in my life or coins that old.”

The realtor immediately called the Carson City Clerk and Recorder Alan Glover who told the men, in weight alone, the coins are worth at least $7 million.

“That's a lot of gold, that's a lot of coins,” Glover said. “Depending on the condition value could go above and beyond gold value.”

Along with the gold, Samaszko left behind stock accounts worth $165,000, $12,000 in cash at the house, but only $200 in the bank.

Despite all of the assets, Samaszko left behind no will.  Glover says the closest family member is a first cousin who lives in California. And after the IRS takes its share, Glover says, the rest will be hers. Nevada Man Leaves Behind $7 Million In Gold Coins
