Outrage Flares Over 'Hitler' Garment Shop

Updated: Monday, September 3 2012, 01:02 PM CDT

A clothing store in India's Gujarat province has caused controversy by being named after Adolf Hitler.

With 'Hitler' in large letters over the door, and a swastika logo dotting the I, the shop has unsurprisingly drawn criticism - particularly from local Jewish community.

But the shop's owner says it's all been a mistake, and that he didn't realize who Hitler was until after the shop opened.

Rakesh Shah says he named the shop after his business partner's grandfather's 'catchy' nickname.

Open only a week, the shop has received numerous complaints and calls to rename his shop.

It's not the first time an Indian business has been criticized for using the German dictator's name . A Mumbai restaurant named 'Hitler's Cross' was renamed after strong protests in 2006.

The Nazi dictator who led the extermination of Jews in World War II Europe is a subject of routine fascination in India.Outrage Flares Over 'Hitler' Garment Shop
