Texan Gets OK To Wear Pasta Strainer For Driver's License Photo

Updated: Monday, August 26 2013, 05:31 PM CDT

A Texas man -- and "Pastafarian" -- has been allowed to wear a pasta strainer on his head for his driver's license photo.

Eddie Castillo, a Texas Tech student, says that if other people are allowed to wear religious headwear then he should too.

Castillo told KAMC that he was allowed to take his official government ID photo while wearing a pasta strainer after a month long battle with the Texas Department of Public Safety, saying the strainer is a symbol of Pastafarianism.

Castillo says Pastafarianism was created as a form of satire. "It shouldn't be taken in a sense that discriminates or disassociates other religions and it should be looked at as a political symbol for the separation between church and state," he says.

He says Pastafarians worship the flying spaghetti monster -- a made-up God that was invented as an argument against teaching intelligent design in schools.

Castillo isn't the first person to attempt this but is the first to be successful in the U.S.

He says his message is more religious-freedom than anti-religion.Texan Gets OK To Wear Pasta Strainer For Driver's License Photo
