12 Dead, 200 Injured In West Explosion

Updated: Friday, April 19 2013, 02:36 PM CDT

Authorities in West now confirm 12 people were killed and more than 200 injured in Wednesday night's fertilizer plant explosion.

A trooper from the Texas Department of Public Safety announced the numbers this morning.  He also said 50 buildings were destroyed.

The search and rescue mission continues.  Crews have cleared 150 buildings, with 25 still to go.

The names of four victims have already been released. Kenny Harris was a 52-year-old captain in the Dallas Fire Department who lived south of West, Calvin Perry of the Navarro Mills Fire Department, and Cyrus Reed and Jerry Chapman, both Abbott firefighters.

Dallas authorities say Harris was off duty at the time but responded to the fire to help.

Of the dead, DPS will not say how many were first responders. Volunteer firefighters from West were the first on the scene. 12 Dead, 200 Injured In West Explosion
